Poster Planning and Codes and Conventions of a print advert

This is our final piece after planning the poster for our documentary. We had to stick to the codes and conventions for our poster so we to researched into Channel 4 and looked at what types of font they used, how many images or what type of image, where the logo would be placed, date and time of the documenaty and what the documentary was called.

We used an image which represented what the documentary would be on, this is why we chose to include tarot cards as it is part of the supernatural and fortune telling which our documentary is on. When brainstorming for the image we would use we thought of things such as fortune cookies, a crystal ball, money, tea leaves and palm reading. In order to pick which image we would use a person in my group asked the target audience (young students) which they believe best links into fortune telling or would be good to use, are results shown that tarrot cards got the most votes recieving 8/20 and tea leaves scored the lowest by only recieving 0/20, these results are shown below:

When we looked on the channel 4 website a lot of the programmes being advertised had an image, then the name of it, date and when it was being showed would be in a box so it is easy readable and the logo was in a distinvtive centre right position so it is clearly visible. We took this on board and decided to include all of these in our poster which is shown above. Here are a few examples of print adverts on channel 4:

All of the font styles are either the same or very similar, they usually have it about the same size unless its the logo of channel 4 which seems to be a bit bigger. Channel 4 use differnt colours for the '4' when using different types of backgrounds so the logo is still visible as shown above. The different types of logos which have been used by channel 4 are:

We decided to use the second logo as it is used most often and would fit in with our poster and the codes and conventions for our print advert.
Codes and Conventions for a poster advertisement are:
  • Title and broadcast, date and time information always visible.
  • One strong key image which links into the certain subject it's based on.
  • Logo of the channel it is on.
  • Words kept to a minimun.
  • Attracts the audience.
  • Branded.
Here are some images of the process in the making of our print advert on adobe photoshop to get our finishing final print advert.
