Final Documentary

Radio Advert

Print Advert

Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We stuck to the codes and conventions by finding music for our documentary which would fit in with our chosen topic and would go well for our documentary, on youtube we found two songs that are played throughout our documentary and radio advert called the 'Haunted Music Box' and the 'Carosuel,' both of these sounds eary and mystical which fits into our documentary 'The Fortune In Fortune Telling' which is based on fortune tellings and supernatural experiences. It's important to stick to the correct codes and conventions as it wouldn't of fit in if we used a happy, up-beat energetic songs throughout our documentary and would of set the wrong mood, atmospehere and impression for our documentary misleading the audience.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

With both our poster advertisment and radio advert we made sure everything was related to the supernatural and included simliar things to make sure it was very similar to our documentary. For example on our poster we used a certain font which not only is the font that channel 4 use (we chose channel 4 as the channel which our documentary would be shown on) but we had also used it within our documentary for the graphic and titling. This is so we wern't changing everything around but making it all simliar to eachother. On our poster we used dim colours as we believed dim colours fit in with the supernatural and give it more of a mysterious and supernatural effect, these were colours such as black, gray, dark red, dark blue and so on.

Also on the poster we used an image of different tarot cards so that the people who see this advertisment have an idea of what our documentary would be based on, we did the background black so that the image would stand out. For both our documentary and radio advert we used the same person to do the voiceover, we chose this person as she had a voice which sounded good for our documentary and radio advert. Everything we had done for our documentary, radio advert and poster was supernatural related and we made sure all three of these were similar to eachother in a way. Within the supernatural i believe everything needs to seem confusing and mysterious so that it makes people think, as for this in our radio advert we used a certain saying which would make the audience question this. Also we used paranormal activity 3 trailer in our research to fit in with the supernatural as we were researching all about the different kinds of supernatural experiences and fortune telling, therefore we added this into our documentary.

As we used tarot cards in the background for the title 'The fortune in fortune telling' we decided as a group that we would also use tarot cards for our print advert so they link in together.

In conclusion our radio advert and print advert linked into our documentary in various different ways for example we made all of them fit in to the supernatural and made it obvious that they were all to do with the supernatural.

Poster Planning and Codes and Conventions of a print advert

This is our final piece after planning the poster for our documentary. We had to stick to the codes and conventions for our poster so we to researched into Channel 4 and looked at what types of font they used, how many images or what type of image, where the logo would be placed, date and time of the documenaty and what the documentary was called.

We used an image which represented what the documentary would be on, this is why we chose to include tarot cards as it is part of the supernatural and fortune telling which our documentary is on. When brainstorming for the image we would use we thought of things such as fortune cookies, a crystal ball, money, tea leaves and palm reading. In order to pick which image we would use a person in my group asked the target audience (young students) which they believe best links into fortune telling or would be good to use, are results shown that tarrot cards got the most votes recieving 8/20 and tea leaves scored the lowest by only recieving 0/20, these results are shown below:

When we looked on the channel 4 website a lot of the programmes being advertised had an image, then the name of it, date and when it was being showed would be in a box so it is easy readable and the logo was in a distinvtive centre right position so it is clearly visible. We took this on board and decided to include all of these in our poster which is shown above. Here are a few examples of print adverts on channel 4:

All of the font styles are either the same or very similar, they usually have it about the same size unless its the logo of channel 4 which seems to be a bit bigger. Channel 4 use differnt colours for the '4' when using different types of backgrounds so the logo is still visible as shown above. The different types of logos which have been used by channel 4 are:

We decided to use the second logo as it is used most often and would fit in with our poster and the codes and conventions for our print advert.
Codes and Conventions for a poster advertisement are:
  • Title and broadcast, date and time information always visible.
  • One strong key image which links into the certain subject it's based on.
  • Logo of the channel it is on.
  • Words kept to a minimun.
  • Attracts the audience.
  • Branded.
Here are some images of the process in the making of our print advert on adobe photoshop to get our finishing final print advert.

Fortune telling was known as the methods or practises of attempting to predict the future. These methods include astrology,  and the unitization of objects such as tarot cars, tea leaves, crystal balls and palm readings.
Throughout this documentary we will we exploring different types and methods of the Fortune telling, and the main marketing background behind it.
From exploring further into fortune tellers we wanted to experience getting our own fortunes read. We visited Blackpool in hope to find few people that claim to be Gypsy Roma fortune tellers, that could predict our future in a personal and accurate ways.
This outcome and prediction can be seen in such a generic manner, that it could be personal to most people.
We were grateful to get a short interview with the Fortune teller,  giving us an insight into the background, and how many people on average actually get the Fortunes Told.
In every 1/3 people we asked  they said they have been to a fortune teller or know at least someone who has had their fortunes told.
We visited another fortune teller booth, who advertised that she has read fortunes for Celebrities and Idols such as  Kim Marsh. Lenny Henrix ,So could this be the reason in why so many people get their fortunes read?
The media has a huge influence within fortune tellings and the supernatural in general,  tv adverts, popular films like paranormal activity, the vampire diaries, that are all being consumed by the general public. Other ways the media has influenced us is magazines, telephone lines, horoscopes, a variety of ways to get your fortunes read in a daily way. This is generating so much income into businesses within the media, we question is it all a scam or is there some truth behind it.
In today’s society it is so easy for people to become influenced by the media, in how they can just open the internet and read an article and base all their knowledge around that article. We interviewed a local teenager who seemed to be having some paranormal experiences. She tells us her main influence was the internet and she gathered her knowledge about what she claims is ’Sleep Paralysis’ from the internet.
When looking closely into how easily people can be influenced we began to ask how easily it can be for anyone to claim they can predict the future,  from work, home or over the internet.
We interviewed a family friend, who claims she can read tealeaves.
So why are so many people still believe in fortune telling, and are still willing to pay, even though the media has had a massive involvement within, through advertisements and films which are fictional. We explore after the break the secrets behind palm readings and the deep truth behind the media, and why so many people still believe.

Storyboarding

When planning our documentary we had to do a storyboard were we sketched out each shot to show how the documentary would flow.

Supernatural experience interview...

Tea Leave Interview...

Running Order

Within making our documentary as a group we had to produce a running order, this was to explain in detail everything that would happen in our documentary and how many seconds long each certain thing would take, aswell as knowing how long it would take we would also have to write down what type of camera shot it would be and.what type of camera angle. We had to plan out our running order for half an hour including commercial breaks even though our documentary clip will only be for five mintues long. The running order will help us with our filming and editing in order to produce our documentary from our running order, this is also so our documentary can be seen in context.
